Without health life is not life; it is only a state of langour and suffering – an image of death. Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the Earth. As we must account for every idle word, so must we account for every idle silence. In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes. To live a pure unselfish life, one must count nothing as one’s own in the midst of abundance. Whatever words we utter should be chosen with care for people will hear them and be influenced by them for good or ill. Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared. It is with your aid, as the people, that I think we shall be able to preserve – not the country, for the country will preserve itself, but the institutions of the country – those institutions which have made us free, intelligent and happy – the most free, the most intelligent, and the happiest people on the globe. The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don’t do anything about it. Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.
