To be idle is a short road to death and to be diligent is a way of life; foolish people are idle, wise people are diligent. However many holy words you read, however many you speak, what good will they do you if you do not act on upon them? Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the Earth. I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand. It is unbecoming for young men to utter maxims. The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don’t do anything about it. It is with your aid, as the people, that I think we shall be able to preserve – not the country, for the country will preserve itself, but the institutions of the country – those institutions which have made us free, intelligent and happy – the most free, the most intelligent, and the happiest people on the globe. Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning. I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts. This country, with its institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it. Whenever they shall grow weary of the existing government, they can exercise their constitutional right of amending it, or exercise their revolutionary right to overthrow it.
